OCTOBER ACTION: Paying our fair share

OCTOBER ACTION: Paying our fair share

Election Alert!  Just days to go...  Let’s make sure that our candidates receive a strong and clear message that we expect our next government to reverse the decline in Official Development Assisance (ODA) spending and set a timetable to meet our long-standing pledge.  The international goal for spending on humanitarian and development aid is set at 0.7 percent of Gross National Income (GNI). Many countries, including the UK, meet this goal.

But last year, Canada contributed .24 of GNI-- dramatically below what we should pay and about half of what we did pay in 1979.  When we fail to pay our fair share over the years, billions of dollars are lost and so are opportunities to increase access to affordable medicines, improve the availability and quality of education, and promote programs to end violence against women.

Let's make sure that we do all we can to see that Africa’s grandmothers, their children and grandchildren gain ground in this election.
