The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria

GRAN'S POSITION ON The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria is one of the most effective and efficient funding mechanisms for combating these three deadly, yet preventable diseases. Since the Global Fund’s inception in 2002, Canada has played a strong leadership role to support its work, and has been a key investor in the fund. During this time, the Global Fund has made incredible progress, saving some 27 million lives world-wide and helping build stronger, more resilient community-based health systems.

The 6th Replenishment Conference

The Sixth Replenishment Conference will take place in October 2019, and has set a goal to raise no less than US$14B, an amount that will simply help maintain its progress. If it could raise more than this amount, much more could be done. Anything less may not be enough to prevent us from sliding back and losing the massive progress made so far. Already we are hearing that the 2020 US budget proposes a cut of $392M in their contribution so Canada’s strong support is needed more than ever.

GRAN's Campaign and Allies

GRAN is mounting a campaign in partnership with the Interagency Coalition on AIDS and Development (ICAD), RESULTS Canada and several other Canadian civil society organizations to urge the Canadian government to maintain its share of the overall Global Fund target by making an early commitment of $1B to the Global Fund before the actual Replenishment Conference in October.

How You can Get Involved

You can help make this campaign a success by:

  • sending a postcard or letter to the Minister of International Development (with a copy to your MP)
  • encouraging friends and colleagues to do the same
  • sending Letters to the Editor that state the case for Canada’s continued substantial contribution, and
  • contacting your MP to urge his/her active support.

Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and international development

GRAN’s Co-Chairs have written to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development to urge its support for an early and substantial Canadian contribution to the Global Fund replenishment. If your own MP sits on this committee, we would ask that you try to arrange a meeting with him or her. (You can quickly check the committee membership   and scrolling down the page to the list of members.)

If you are successful in arranging a meeting with your MP, let our friends at RESULTS Canada know by contacting Neha Beri at  (RESULTS Canada may have a member in your riding to partner with you, thus strengthening the message and impact.)

For helpful tips on preparing to visit your MP, .
